One of FRESH’s first objectives is to build an online “Rolodex” of collaborators with diverse areas of expertise relevant to Circumpolar food systems. As a searchable database of self-submitted profiles, the catalog will provide users with the ability to locate potential collaborators and content experts, and facilitate new interdisciplinary relationships that foster systems thinking. Profile information will be publicly available, and will include location and affiliation(s), contact information, areas of expertise, collaboration preferences, willingness to provide consultations or guest presentations, assets and resources, publication citations, and photos. The Spring Creek Farm is a productive training farm that sells produce at local markets and through community supported agriculture (CSA) subscriptions. Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development
The Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development (JAFSCD) is a peer-reviewed quarterly publication focused on food and farming-related community development. As of January 2018, JAFSCD became open access by adopting a shareholder model, whereby organizations, libraries, and individuals from across the United States “buy in” to support publication costs for the benefit of all. Shareholders gain added benefits such as article publishing charge waivers, free advertising, and a listing in the Sustainable Food Systems Sourcebook. FRESH Directors Liz Snyder and Rachael Miller coordinated with the UAA Center for Community Engagement and Learning (CCEL), Alaska Pacific University, and the Alaska Food Policy Council (AFPC) to buy in as a JAFSCD shareholder group in 2018, with support from the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS). Faculty and students at UA and APU, as well as members of the AFPC, can publish accepted articles for free in JAFSCD, and FRESH is available to assist community organizations in manuscript preparations.
